Presentation Speech
Hi everyone, I am Alex.
Welcome to my film festival presentation. In this project, I will explore the process, purpose, and necessity of developing a visual system across any medium. I will use my ability to identify, manage, and deliver a complex, multifaceted project.
Chapter 1
The first step is to have an initial plan, starting by choosing a film director I would really enjoy working with, and developing a design brief. I chose Guillermo del Toro as the film festival theme director because his creative approach is different. He’s a master of creating monsters and giving them a unique purpose in this world. Therefore, I decided that the theme of my film festival is exposing the real meaning of true monsters, and their unlikely heroic deeds to self-redemption. My target audience is people who feel lost or misunderstood in society. People who often feel like they are outcasts but still are good people. The festival will be hosted from October 9 to 12. October 9 is also del Toro’s birthday. The festival location is at Oasis Church in LA. Specifically chosen because it's near where del Toro lives, but also because it hints at his struggles as a youth with his catholic upbringing juxtaposition against his own thoughts of the mystical that of looking at monsters as his gods.
Chapter 2
The second step is to design a visual guideline, title & subtitle, and festival identity. I use two sections for visual guidelines. A guiding narrative and a master mood board. My guiding narrative is about a mad scientist who was forced to move to an underground biology laboratory and his notes of what he’s seen and been through. The master moodboard is a collection of photos based on the guiding narrative. These images are the actual pictures I use. My festival visual is texture driven because I wanted to create a sense of “walk through the darkness.” The choice of the typefaces. Chambers Sans to show the scientific feel. Garamond to show old school feel, and the American typewriter to show the letters in the system. The choice of colors is green, blue, and yellow or gold to match del Toro’s film’s overall color palette. The brownish color to match the visual system. The final festival title is Through the Darkness. The subtitle is Discovering unlikely acts of heroism in real monsters via the prism of Guillermo del Toro.
Chapter 3
There are 16 deliverables for this project. Due to the timing for this presentation, I am not going to show every detail of each deliverable, but one or two items per deliverable to bring the big idea across. You can always find my entire project on thedarkness.myportfolio.com. The first item is the main poster. The poster uses the festival theme which is the mad scientist journal. The poster shows one of the spreads of the journal which also connects to the Monster catalog. And now the monster catalog for Through the Darkness, Guillermo del Toro Film Festival. The theme is the mad scientist's journal. I use leather texture for the cover. For inner spreads, I use paper textures, collage-style layouts and a note-taking journal look to give a personalized feeling. I also use some white pages to help readers' eyes rest. These are the DVD packages for Through the Darkness Film Festival. The festival presents 8 feature films with a total of 8 discs in 4 boxes. The film's order in the discs follows the same order as the festival. The Soundtrack contains 8 songs from the 8 feature films at the festival. It is a special soundtrack edition with all the songs re-recorded in different studios in LA. Working with Choir groups to present the true soul of Guillermo del Toro's films. The Advertisements are a mix of ads for newspapers, magazines, train stations, and subways. The ads contain essential information for users to know more about the festival. The website offers users essential information for the festival and lets visitors purchase the tickets. The app showcases the same system as the website but simplifies the layout and navigation for a better user experience. Based on the research the sandwich menu is on the bottom right for a better user experience. This is the business / stationary system for the Film festival. It communicates the visual system and the theme of the films. These are paper tickets. I found that paper tickets give our visitors a good sense of memory. They can use the tickets as bookmarks or just a memorable item to keep. The E-ticket can be found in the App. The sketchbook is the other selling item. We encourage our visitors to draw or write down their thoughts or imagination of their true monsters. The sketchbook cover uses leather just like the catalog. Inner pages use textural high-quality paper. Social media campaign contains Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Another item that can have long-lasting value to users is maskes. These masks are another limited edition item for the festival.
Okay! Well, there you have it. For more details please take a look at thedarkness.myportfolio.com. I hope through this festival, my audience feels a sense that after the darkness, light is always there for them.
Thank you for watching.
